The state said it could cause unrest. But the High Court just quashed the case; and here’s why it matters. The posters didn’t threaten anyone. They didn’t name hate groups. They didn’t even use swear words. Just a simple message: “Justice is denied. Raise your voice.” And that, the Karnataka High Court said, is protected under our Constitution; Article 19(1)(a). Dissent isn’t a crime. Criticizing a judgment? Not illegal. Even if it’s about the Supreme Court. The state argued the posters could create disharmony. The Court disagreed. It said: mere discomfort or disagreement from a few people doesn’t equal “promoting enmity” under IPC Section 153A. That’s a big win for free speech. What’s scary? That someone thought this needed a criminal case. What’s hopeful? That the judiciary is drawing clear lines; you can disagree with courts. Loudly. Publicly. Legally. This isn’t just about 13 people in Mangaluru. It’s about every citizen who’s ever had a problem with a verdict; and feared speaking up. Because the biggest threat to justice isn’t protest. It’s silence.
