It’s a lesson in cultural fit. When Reliance Retail brought 7-Eleven to Mumbai in 2021, it wasn’t just opening a store; it was trying to recreate the Japanese convenience store magic. Clean shelves. Hot vada pav. 24/7 coffee. Even the name was local: “India ki Nayi Tapri.” But five years later? Zero stores. ₹9 billion in revenue. ₹9 billion in losses. Why? Because India doesn’t need a global brand to tell it how to shop. It already has kirana; the neighborhood shop where you buy milk in slippers, where the owner knows your name, and where ₹10 can buy you a snack, a cigarette, or a pack of biscuits. Kirana still owns 91% of India’s grocery market. And guess what? It’s not going anywhere. 7-Eleven failed not because Indians dislike convenience; but because they already have it. Just not in air-conditioned, standardized form. The real story? Sometimes the best business model isn’t the fanciest. It’s the one that already fits people’s lives. India didn’t reject 7-Eleven. It just reminded the world: real convenience doesn’t need branding. It just needs to be there.
