Paresh Salgaoncar isn’t some activist. He’s a regular guy who’s voted since 2003; in panchayat, state and Lok Sabha polls. But when he moved houses within Goa, the system told him to pretend he’s never voted before. Just to get his name back on the voter list. His crime? Filling Form 8 to update his address. The EC’s software rejected it. Then they told him to file Form 6; meant for first-time voters. “I’d be lying,” he says. “That’s not me.” The High Court in Goa is now questioning how many others are silently being erased from electoral rolls because of a glitch or rigid policy. Salgaoncar’s case could become a landmark; where the right to vote meets the right to truth. This isn’t just about one man. It’s about thousands who might’ve shifted during the SIR; and now face the impossible choice: lie or lose their vote.
