A 51-year-old Delhi teacher is juggling 13-hour workdays — teaching by day, election duties by night — and still expected to prepare for a high-stakes promotion exam.

Sound impossible? It is. And she’s not alone. Over 800 teachers are caught in the same trap, torn between SIR duties and a once-in-a-decade chance to become principal or vice-principal. The Delhi teachers’ body has begged UPSC to delay the Nov 1 exam; by 4 to 6 weeks; so they can even *think* about studying. But here’s the twist: UPSC hasn’t replied. Meanwhile, the SIR exercise, meant to end in October, got pushed to December. That’s 4 extra months of unpaid, high-pressure work; on top of classroom teaching. One teacher teaches till 6:30 PM, then clocks in for election work till 9 PM. No time to revise. No time to breathe. For many, this might be their last shot at promotion. And the system? It’s asking them to do the impossible; and calling it normal.
