Yes, you read that right. And now, a Hindi writer is asking the Patna High Court: how? The book, ‘Kishore Kumar: The Ultimate Biography’, was honored at the 70th National Film Awards in 2024. But the petition claims the selection broke its own rules; which clearly stated the award should go to a book “on cinema”. Not music. Not biography. Cinema. The petitioner, literary critic Anant Prasad Sinha, says the guidelines issued just days before the award were ignored. The court has now asked the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and NFDC to explain; and they’ve got three weeks to respond. This isn’t about hating the book (it’s widely praised). It’s about process. If a singing icon’s life story can win a cinema award, what’s the point of categories? And what does this say about how honors are decided in the first place? The bigger question: are we losing clarity in celebrating art; or just bending rules for icons?
