It’s about justice, literally. The Union Cabinet has greenlit a bench of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court to sit in Ladakh. For years, residents in remote parts of Ladakh had to travel hundreds of kilometres, often through harsh terrain, just to access High Court justice. No more. This move cuts travel time, reduces costs, and brings legal recourse closer to home. Union Home Minister Amit Shah called it a “historic” step; and it truly is. Ladakh may be small in population, but its geographic isolation made justice a luxury. Now, it’s becoming a right. This isn’t just about courts; it’s about dignity, equity, and governance that doesn’t forget its farthest citizens. And in a country this vast, that’s rare. Worth noting? The timing; five years after Ladakh became a Union Territory. Was this delayed? Maybe. But better late than never. The real test? Implementation. Will the bench be fully staffed? Will local lawyers and litigants truly benefit? Only time will tell. But for now; justice just got a new address.
