St Stephen’s College, a historic minority institution, hired assistant professors; but Delhi University said: "Wait, you broke the rules." The university flagged that 234 people were shortlisted for just 3 jobs; and that cut-offs were lowered from 55 to 50. Even worse? They didn’t tell applicants how they were being judged until after interviews. The college argued: "We’re a minority institution; we can set our own rules." But DU pushed back: "Nope. You’re part of us. Follow our rules." Then came the twist; the college ignored a Delhi High Court order and let new hires start work anyway. This isn’t just about one college. It’s about power; who decides how teachers get hired? The university? Or the college? And what happens when minority status clashes with public accountability? The real question: Can a college bend recruitment rules because it’s “special”? Or should every government-backed hiring be held to the same standard; for fairness, for merit, for transparency? This fight might be about professors… but the rules written here could affect thousands of job openings across India.
