This isn’t just about one celebrity; it’s about how far the government can go in regulating foreign nationals, even those with privileged OCI cards. The law doesn’t explicitly ban protests, but under the new Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, authorities can order foreigners out for ‘security’ or ‘public interest’ reasons; no trial, no detailed explanation needed. OCI holders aren’t citizens. They can’t vote, can’t protest legally, and can be sent packing if the state deems their presence ‘unpleasant’. Past cases; like writer Aatish Taseer, academic Ashok Swain, or doctor Christo Philip; show these powers aren’t theoretical. And with courts often deferring to ‘executive discretion’, the line between lawful control and political silencing is getting blurrier. What happens next? It’s not just about Imran Khan. It’s about who really gets to stay; and speak; in India.
