After the BJP-led NDA swept 34 of 42 seats in Silchar’s first municipal corporation election; using *paper ballots*; Sarma joked, “Congress loses even on paper ballots.” Why does this matter? Because for years, the Congress has claimed EVMs are rigged. This time, no machines. Just ink, paper, and people making choices. And yet, Congress got only 2 seats. Independents got 6. BJP? 32. AGP? 2. Silchar’s civic body hadn’t had an elected government in 6 years. Issues like waterlogging, potholed roads, and erratic power were front and center. Voters didn’t just choose candidates; they chose who they believe can fix their city. Sarma called it a vote for Modi’s “Viksit Bharat” vision. BJP Assam chief Dilip Saikia added: “They always cry EVM tampering. This time, no machines. Still, nowhere.” The real story? Voters don’t care about conspiracy theories. They care about drains, taps, and streetlights; and who they think can fix them.
