A Goa family just had their names removed from voters’ lists; not because they weren’t eligible, but because they filled out the wrong form at the ‘wrong time’. The Bombay High Court is now questioning the Election Commission: why reject Form 8 during a voter revision drive? The court says, the goal isn’t paperwork perfection; it’s making sure every citizen can vote. If someone moves house and tries to update their address, shouldn’t the system help them; not shut them out? Judges pointed out: the EC’s own mission is to include voters, not exclude them over technicalities. Even if Form 8 was submitted after the deadline, couldn’t it be kept pending? The EC insists only Form 6 counts post-revision; but the court isn’t convinced. After all, if the system waits until the next 24-year revision cycle, millions could be left out. The bigger question: Should democracy be about rules… or people?
