In France, there’s even a new prize; Prix Pascal de Littérature IA; for books co-written with artificial intelligence. Sounds futuristic, right? But here’s the catch: the literary world is divided. While some say it’s inevitable, others; like authors John Grisham and George R.R. Martin; are suing AI companies, saying their books were used without permission. And recently, a winner of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize was pulled amid AI allegations. So what’s really at stake? Not just who wins an award; but what we believe literature is. Is it the perfectly crafted sentence? Or the messy, human struggle behind it; the doubts, the drafts, the late nights? AI can mimic the output. But can it ever replicate the soul behind the story? As Beckett once wrote: “The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new.” Some things, maybe, should stay human.
