What looks like one species might actually be two; or maybe not. Scientists are still debating whether the Himalayan grey langur (Semnopithecus schistaceus) and the Kashmir grey langur (S. ajax) are separate or just variations. A 2020 study using DNA and body structure suggested grouping them under one name; but not everyone agrees. That means databases, papers, and conservation plans may still be using conflicting names. Why does this matter? Because if we don’t know exactly who we’re protecting, how can we save them? These langurs live from 1,500 to 4,000 metres; surviving freezing winters, eating leaves, and even hanging out near temples and farms. Their survival depends on connected forests across borders.
