West Bengal’s government just teamed up with UNESCO and the UN to make pandals accessible for persons with disabilities. Think ramps, sign language interpreters, quiet zones, and trained volunteers; not extras, but essentials. This isn’t charity. It’s justice. And it’s part of a bigger vision: treating culture as something everyone owns. With 26.8 million Indians living with disabilities and 104 million over 60, ignoring accessibility isn’t an oversight; it’s exclusion. The 2021 UNESCO recognition wasn’t just for art and rituals. It was for the people; priests, drummers, artists, and now, the disabled community too. This year, committees in Kolkata and Delhi are piloting SOPs across six areas: infrastructure, communication, programming, emergencies, training, and attitudes. Real change doesn’t always roar. Sometimes, it arrives quietly; with a ramp, a braille guide, or a volunteer’s smile. Let’s hope this becomes the blueprint for Diwali, Holi, Eid, and every festival that follows. Because if we can’t celebrate together, are we really celebrating at all?
