An exhibition titled 'Southern Latitudes' in Thiruvananthapuram is quietly unpacking how South India’s art scene exploded in the 1960s–80s. Curated by artist-writer Tensing Joseph, it brings together 140+ works from 30 legendary artists; many of whom were shaped by Madras (Chennai) and Kerala’s cultural revolution. What’s fascinating? It’s not just about paintings. Newspapers, magazine clippings, and handwritten notes from that era are on display; showing how writers like MT Vasudevan Nair or Basheer, and illustrators like MV Devan, fueled the modernist wave. Even KCS Paniker; the pioneer behind Cholamandal; gets his due. But here’s the twist: many of these artworks were nearly lost. Tensing spent months tracking down pieces from family attics, old studios, and reluctant galleries; some even damaged beyond repair. The exhibition’s mission? To prove that South India didn’t just follow national trends; it carved its own path in modern art. Open till Oct 25. Free entry. Go if you care about art that shaped a generation.
