Chennai alone handles 30% of all airport wildlife seizures. Why? Because rich buyers here want ‘exotic’ pets; gibbons, slow lorises, even orangutans; not knowing they’re driving endangered species toward extinction. Orangutans don’t belong in Indian forests. They belong in rainforests, with their mothers. And yet, here we are; with babies left to die unless villagers find them. The problem isn’t just smuggling. It’s ignorance. Police don’t know how to handle trafficked animals. Society doesn’t see owning one as a crime; but as a status symbol. That needs to change. Before the next baby ape is found; too late.
