And here’s the catch: while the US, EU, and China are actively reshaping how these platforms work; by controlling ownership, algorithms, or both; India is still mostly policing what people post. That’s like trying to fix a factory by only checking the final product, not the machines making it. The attention economy is real. Every scroll, every like, every minute you spend is being turned into profit; by companies that don’t answer to Indian laws. Why? Because India’s digital rules don’t touch the core: who owns the tech, and how it’s designed to keep you hooked. UPI proves we can build tech that serves citizens; not ads. The real question isn’t why we’re addicted to apps. It’s why we let foreign companies own the attention of 700 million people; and call it progress.
