At the UNGA, India’s delegate Anuj Swarup slammed the report as "heresy dressed up as a UN report," especially since it cited unnamed sources from India claiming youth faced backlash for discussing mental health or gender justice. With over 500 million young people, India says such broad claims; without evidence or verification; do more harm than good. What’s behind this? A report by Special Rapporteur Gina Romero, based on 190 submissions globally, including 180 from youth, but zero named Indian contributors. India’s rebuttal? Its Constitution guarantees free speech and assembly; and it’s already taking action, from fixing exam leaks to launching national youth dialogues with PM Modi. The key question: Should global bodies rely on anonymous claims when speaking about a country’s youth? Many say no; and India’s pushback could reshape how such reports are made in the future.
