The UN human rights office expressed concern over detentions of protesters, lawyers, and journalists ahead of large demonstrations. India’s reply? Sharp. "Concerns are misplaced," said the Permanent Mission in Geneva, pointing to its Constitution, independent judiciary, and democratic traditions. But here’s the twist: India didn’t just defend itself; it called out the UN for selective scrutiny, asking why similar attention isn’t given to protests in other democracies. The backdrop? Thousands detained in Delhi to prevent mass gatherings at Jantar Mantar, with authorities citing public safety. Legal minds are now split: Is this about maintaining order… or silencing dissent? The Supreme Court is set to hear contempt pleas today, adding fuel to the fire. This isn’t just about one protest; it’s about who gets to decide what ‘peaceful assembly’ really means in a democracy that’s 1.4 billion strong.
