At the UN General Assembly’s Legal Committee, India’s Counsellor R. Mythili demanded that terrorist acts meeting a certain threshold be officially classified as ‘Crimes Against Humanity’. Why does this matter? Because right now, terrorism often slips between legal cracks; prosecuted under national laws or scattered UN resolutions, but never as a unified global crime against humanity. India’s push aims to change that. The goal? A legally binding global convention by 2028 that doesn’t just copy-paste existing laws, but creates a stronger, sovereign-respecting framework where nations lead, but with global accountability. Think of it: if a terrorist attack kills hundreds, it shouldn’t just be an ‘act of terror’; it should be treated as an attack on humanity itself. And India’s saying; it’s time we treat it that way. This isn’t just diplomacy. It’s about justice, victims, and ensuring no nation can hide behind sovereignty to avoid accountability. Smart move; and one that could shake up global legal norms.
