This wasn’t a zoo transfer. It was a rescue, a rehab, and a repatriation. Found in Gujarat in 2024, this little Sumatran orangutan; critically endangered, by the way; got medical care, space to grow, and then a one-way ticket home to Sumatra. No cost. No drama. Just quiet global teamwork. But here’s the twist: Five more baby orangutans were found alone in Odisha in 2026. Still being nursed at Nandankanan Zoo, their origins are being confirmed. Indonesia already wants them back; and experts are flying in to help. Why does this matter? Because these aren’t pets. They’re CITES Appendix I species; meaning international trade is banned. Every time one shows up in India, it screams illegal wildlife trafficking. And India? It’s choosing to return them, not keep them. That’s rare. And it’s smart. Exam tip: Know CITES (1973), Appendix I, Pongo abelii, and Nandankanan Zoo. One question could be hiding in this story.
