But here’s the twist: 5 more were found in Odisha just weeks ago. These apes don’t belong in India. They’re native to Borneo and Sumatra; which means they were likely smuggled. The first one, named Rocky, was found in a cage in Thane with snakes and a tortoise. Now he’s back home in Medan. India’s not just returning him; they waived all care costs as a goodwill gesture. And now, 5 more are waiting at Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar, as officials race to confirm their origin before repatriation. Why does this matter? Because this could be the tip of a bigger wildlife trafficking iceberg. And India’s playing by the rules; CITES-approved, bilateral coordination, zero cost-shifting. Two orangutans have been waiting 4 years already. This time, things might finally move faster.
