A massive showdown over protest rights. Over 1,000 people detained; including top opposition leaders like Kejriwal, Mamata, and Vijayan; during a demonstration led by the quirky "Cockroach Janta Party" demanding CEC’s resignation. The UN asked for restraint, due process, and unconditional releases. India replied: Our Constitution guarantees protest rights; but only within "reasonable restrictions" for public order. Courts, media, judiciary; we’ve got systems, they say. Also interesting? India urged the UN to stop being selective; and look at protests in other countries too. This isn’t just about detention numbers. It’s about who gets to define "peaceful protest"; and who decides when the state can shut down metro stations, arrest opposition leaders, and silence critics; all while claiming democracy is intact.
