With 11 full members and 10 partners now representing nearly half the world’s population, BRICS is moving beyond being just a “group of emerging economies”; it’s becoming a parallel engine of global trade, tech, and finance. One headline? The BRICS AI Open Source Zone; China’s offer to share large language models, training tools, and open ecosystems with developing nations. Why does it matter? Because most Global South countries have been left behind in the AI race; until now. Also on the table: local currency trade, payment systems like BRICS Pay (linking UPI, Pix, CIPS), and infrastructure loans via the New Development Bank; $43 billion already approved since 2016. India and China, despite border tensions, agreed to boost financial cooperation; and even talked about stabilizing supply chains together. The real story? It’s not about beating the West. It’s about building an alternative; one trade deal, one AI model, one digital currency pilot at a time. And this isn’t a future plan. It’s already happening.
