With 550 million users already and a target of 1 billion by 2030, the real story isn’t just about coverage... it’s about what’s running on top of it. AI is now the hidden engine pushing demand for faster uplink speeds, lower latency, and smarter networks; exactly what 5G was built for. Ericsson’s Nitin Bansal says we’re barely scratching the surface: only 1/3rd of Indians are on 5G, and monthly data usage per user has hit 36–37 GB; a number that would’ve sounded crazy just a few years ago. As telcos like Airtel roll out network slicing for premium users, and FWA reaches 13.45 million homes, the game is shifting from ‘connecting people’ to ‘powering AI-driven experiences’. The next wave? Think AR, smart infrastructure, and real-time automation; all riding on India’s 5G backbone. This isn’t just telecom. It’s the infrastructure of India’s digital future.
