A new report from Union Bank of India reveals that over the next 3-5 years, India’s AI sector will need massive debt financing to build data centres and compute infrastructure. Why? Because while we have 900 million internet users and 700+ million smartphone users, we don’t have enough homegrown GPUs or data centres to power the AI revolution. Here’s the twist: We’re great at software and talent; but weak on hardware. GPUs, the backbone of AI, become obsolete in just 18-24 months. And we’re not making them locally. That’s why companies are turning to loans, leasebacks, and hyperscaler deals to fund compute power; not equity or VC funding. And there’s more: Skilled AI talent is leaving for the US and Gulf, regulation is still catching up, and most foundational AI models are built abroad. But there’s hope; government grants and PPPs are backing AI skilling centres, and banks are creating new loan products to support this tech leap. If you’re eyeing government jobs; especially in tech, IT, or digital infrastructure; this is your sign. The next big hiring wave won’t be in clerical roles. It’ll be in AI governance, data centre management, and hardware policy. The race isn’t just for engineers; it’s for regulators, financiers, and infrastructure planners too.
