Even as UPI and digital payments soar, the RBI says currency in circulation is still growing at double-digit rates. 176 billion banknotes. 28 billion printed yearly. 21 billion destroyed. Why? Because millions still rely on cash; in remote villages, small shops, elder communities. Digital is rising, but cash is not quitting. The RBI has to plan for both; and it’s a massive logistical puzzle. Mountains, deserts, islands; cash must reach everywhere. They’re even testing polymer notes and eco-friendly disposal. Bottom line? For all the tech buzz, physical currency remains a pillar of India’s economy; and its sovereignty.
