Since 88% of our oil is dollar-priced, it's a double whammy; weaker rupee + costlier oil = bigger import bill. Even though the RBI says we're strong, the truth is buried in the fine print. Usable reserves? Closer to $588 billion. And for 13 quarters, debt has grown faster than reserves. That’s not resilience; it’s quiet risk. India doesn’t borrow in rupees. We borrow in dollars. We pay for oil in dollars. The world trades in dollars. And when global markets panic, dollars vanish; fast. That’s original sin: emerging economies like ours can’t escape dollar dependence. The big lesson? Big reserves don’t equal safety. Real strength comes from exporting more, paying less for energy, and letting the rupee play a bigger global role. Right now, we’re still hooked on the dollar; and that's the real vulnerability.
