The UN Human Rights Office called out mass arrests before and during a protest demanding the CEC’s resignation. Over 7,000 detained? That number alone should make you pause. Their demand? Transparency in election leadership. The UN urged India to restore peaceful assembly rights; and to release those held “arbitrarily.” India’s rebuttal? Clear and firm: “Unwarranted interference.” Our mission at the UN said these rights are protected; yes, but with “reasonable restrictions.” Police acted legally, courts are open, and our institutions work. And hey, why isn’t the UN equally loud about protests elsewhere? Here’s the twist: The protest was led by a party called the ‘Cockroach Janta Party’; yes, that’s real. Symbolic? Maybe. But it highlights how grassroots voices are often met with lockdowns, not dialogue. The real question isn’t whether India has the right to maintain order. It’s whether order is being used to silence dissent. In a democracy, protest isn’t a crime; it’s a check. When 7,000 people vanish into detention during a peaceful demand for accountability, the world notices. And so should we. This isn’t just Delhi’s story. It’s about how democracies handle discomfort; and whether their own rules still apply when they’re inconvenient.
