At the Munich Security Conference, CEO Benedikt Franke dropped a subtle but powerful observation: *“India has said the right things for years… not often lent its weight… It’s finally walking the talk.”* What changed? For years, India’s stance on Ukraine was seen as cautious; voting abstentions at the UN, maintaining energy ties with Russia, avoiding direct pressure on Moscow. But now, both Putin and Ukraine’s Foreign Minister have acknowledged that *India’s proposals are the only ones they’re seriously considering*. That’s not just diplomatic noise; it’s real influence. Why now? Franke suggests India’s ambition is catching up with its actions. Global stability is key for India’s growth. Poverty reduction, tech rise, space missions; none of that works in chaos. Plus, multi-alignment has limits. When civilians die daily and international law is violated, even “non-aligned” democracies can’t stay silent forever. And here’s the twist; India’s closeness to Russia isn’t a weakness. It’s leverage. Franke puts it bluntly: *“When you buy from the shopkeeper, don’t kiss him.”* Photos from the BRICS summit, warm embraces; they send signals. But what if that same relationship becomes a tool to end the war? India could break the ice. And if it does, the US might follow. The world’s biggest conflicts won’t be solved by one nation; but if India steps up, it might just change the game. The quiet power player? Maybe not so quiet anymore.
