It’s easy to point fingers — but what happens when the accuser’s own past comes back to haunt them?

That’s exactly what Union Minister Piyush Goyal is now throwing at Congress, accusing them of turning election watchdogs into party loyalists. He didn’t mince words: “They bribed them with Padma awards.” Goyal zeroed in on a pattern; former Chief Election Commissioners (CECs) who went from safeguarding democracy to serving partisan politics. Take TN Seshan: appointed CEC, then fielded by Congress against LK Advani in 1999. He lost; but the message was clear. Then there’s MS Gill; awarded Padma Vibhushan while still in office, later becoming a Congress minister. Two others? Made Governors within months of retirement. The real sting? Goyal claims Naveen Chawla became CEC despite being recommended for removal; and appointed by Sonia Gandhi, even while not in power. And Ratna U Kelkar? Made Chief Advisor in Kerala right after elections concluded. This isn’t just political mudslinging. It’s a reminder that institutions can’t stay independent if parties keep pulling strings; from both sides. The opposition is screaming for the current CEC’s removal. But Goyal’s asking: “What’s your track record?” Maybe the real fight isn’t just about today’s ECI; it’s about who gets to shape the rules next time.
