His appointment fills a vacancy left when his predecessor, Sanjay Kumar, was unexpectedly moved back to the Delhi government after just two years. What’s unusual? Kumar had signed the critical 2025 order launching the SIR (Systematic Identification of Risks); a move that sparked internal debate within the ECI. Rajpurohit, previously handling defence production, now steps into a role where tech and elections collide; a high-stakes arena where even small decisions can ripple across democracy. His term runs till 2030; meaning he’ll likely steer India’s electoral tech through at least one general election.
