For 14 years, this community has fought to celebrate the goddess, not in temples or clubs, but in their own courtyards. ‘Why can’t we?’ they asked; even as locals complained their stage was ‘too big’. Even as they were banned from others’ pujas. Even as society looked away. Here’s the twist: the same clay used to sculpt Durga idols across Kolkata? It comes from their courtyards. The very women who give life to the idol are often denied space at the puja. So they built their own. This year, MLAs, students, and activists showed up; not as saviors, but as guests. One sex worker’s son said it best: ‘We want to be part of every puja; not just our own.’ The fight isn’t over. But for the first time, someone’s listening. And that’s a bigger miracle than any idol.
