Surat’s ITIs are about to get a ₹240 crore makeover — and it’s being led by a steel giant.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India just signed a deal with Gujarat to upgrade five government ITIs under PM-SETU. What’s unusual? The company owns 51% of the project. Yes, a private player is taking charge of public skill centres. Why? To bridge the gap between what students learn and what factories need. Think modern machinery, updated courses, and hands-on training; especially for women at ITIs in Sachin and Surat. This isn’t just infrastructure; it’s about creating job-ready talent aligned with industry demand. And this is just one cluster. Another ₹200 crore project is happening in Visakhapatnam. Together, they’re part of a massive ₹60,000 crore national plan to upgrade 1,000 ITIs. If you’re a student or parent, this impacts your future; better training could mean better jobs. If you’re an employer, this means a stronger local talent pool. The real story? The government is quietly handing over control of public skill centres to private players; and it may change how vocational education works in India.
