But what if the very person meant to protect democracy is appointed by the same government that benefits from elections? That’s the dangerous reality Justice Rohinton Nariman just flagged. He called out the ECI’s recent actions; like disenfranchising 90 lakh voters in West Bengal; as “malfunctioning,” and warned that letting the government pick Election Commissioners undermines the Constitution itself. What’s worse? The Supreme Court’s split verdict on this means the status quo continues; and the government keeps making appointments without judicial oversight. Justice Nariman’s message is clear: if the appointment process isn’t fixed, democracy’s heartbeat; your vote; is at risk. And while the ECI now says it’s ‘reverting’ to old forms after public outcry, the damage to trust is permanent. The real test? Whether the SC acts before the next big election; or lets the system keep glitching.
