This year, from October 6 to October 12, the 2026 laureates will be announced; starting with Medicine and ending with Economics. Created by Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel (yes, the dynamite guy), the prizes were his way of leaving behind a legacy for humanity’s greatest minds. What’s truly fascinating? Nobel himself spent his life making weapons; but was later inspired by a peace activist to include the Peace Prize. The first awards were handed out in 1901, a full five years after his death! Each laureate receives 12 million Swedish crowns (over ₹10 crore) and global fame; but not always without controversy. From Nobel’s own family (the Curies won multiple times!) to controversial picks like Kissinger or the infamous lobotomy award; the prizes aren’t without drama. The real magic? The glittering December 10 ceremony; where winners dine on secret Nordic menus at Stockholm’s City Hall, while the Peace Prize is handed out in Oslo. A true celebration of genius, legacy, and legacy in the making.
