Eight workers died after a landslide at a site that had already been flagged for disaster risk. Even though Kerala’s experts added climate safeguards; like weather stations and rain alerts; they still weren’t enough. Why? Because India’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) rules, made back in 2006, weren’t built for a world of unpredictable monsoons and collapsing slopes. They still treat climate change as optional, not essential. Now, experts say it’s time to rewire the entire system: climate risk must be mandatory in every project’s planning stage.
