It’s what happened at Jantar Mantar this week, as opposition parties took on the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The target? Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters weren’t just holding placards; they were demanding accountability. Allegations? Irregularities in voter list updates. The backdrop? Internal dissent within the EC itself; with two commissioners reportedly objecting to key decisions at least 14 times in 10 months. Police imposed Section 163 restrictions, blocked the protest; and still, leaders like Saurabh Bharadwaj and KC Venugopal showed up. Venugopal called it a battle to “save democracy”; because, in his words, “common men’s votes are being snatched.” The EC says differences are ‘part of decision-making’ and that all final decisions were unanimous. But when internal objections become public; and protests turn into FIRs; trust erodes. Especially when voters are in the crossfire. This isn’t just politics. It’s about whose vote gets counted; and who gets to decide.
