For years, they lose sleep, relationships, savings, even their sense of self. One aspirant gave up after 7 years; no doctor, no breaks, just syllabus. Another moved cities, took loans, got mocked at home when she failed. A third, daughter of an IAS officer, broke down after clearing Mains; only to lose at interview. Here’s what they wish they’d known earlier: Your worth isn’t tied to an exam. You don’t need to be an IAS officer to serve society. And sometimes, walking away isn’t failure; it’s freedom. Thousands still dream of UPSC. But those who walked away? They’re building quiet, meaningful lives; outside the glare, but no less impactful. The real test wasn’t clearing UPSC. It was learning how to live after it.
