On October 23, they’ll launch the Himalayan Yak Herders’ Network; a cross-border coalition to fight shrinking pastures, climate change, and youth migration. In India alone, yak numbers dropped from 58,000 (2019) to just 32,000 (2026) under federation care. Why? Younger generations are leaving. Pastures are disappearing. Wildlife is attacking livestock. This isn’t just about animals; it’s about 25–30 million people across the Hindu Kush Himalaya who depend on rangelands. The network, led by herders themselves and hosted by Bhutan, grew from a 2016 idea via ICIMOD. Now, three national federations are joining forces: India, Nepal, Bhutan. The real story? Traditional knowledge + modern cooperation might be the key to survival. No fancy tech. No big budgets. Just herders, mountains, and the will to keep their culture alive. If this doesn’t inspire you, nothing will.
